“ENGAGING COMMUNITIES AND PARTNERS IN IMPROVING SCHOOLS AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IS ESSENTIAL TO THE SUCCESS OF BUILDING THE BEST EDUCATION SYSTEM IN THE COUNTRY.  COMMUNITY GROUPS, BUSINESSES, SCHOOLS, TEACHERS AND PARENTS HAVE ALL RECOGNIZED THE IMPORTANCE EACH CAN PLAY IN PROVIDING HANDS-ON LEARNING EXPERIENCES FOR CHILDREN IN THEIR OWN COMMUNITY.” – Kelly Lamrock, Minister of Education

WHAT IS A COMMUNITY SCHOOL?

A COMMUNITY SCHOOL ENCOURAGES THE COMMUNITY TO BECOME MORE ACTIVE IN THE LIFE OF THE SCHOOL AND IN ASSISTING KIDS TO LEARN.

A COMMUNITY SCHOOL HELPS KIDS TO DEVELOP A SENSE OF BELONGING AND COMMITMENT TO THEIR COMMUNITY.A

COMMUNITY SCHOOL USES COMMUNITY RESOURCES SUCH AS VOLUNTEER GROUPS, PARENTS, PUBLIC SERVICES AND RECREATIONAL AND CULTURAL OPPORTUNITIES TO TURN A SCHOOL INTO A CENTRE OF OPPORTUNITY FOR CHILDREN, YOUTH, FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER SCHOOL HOURS.

When Kids Come First is New Brunswick’s strategic plan to build the best educational system for our children.
The goal is for every child to graduate from high school having had the opportunity to discover their personal strengths and to find something they love doing.
One of the initiatives to grow from this plan is Community Schools.

What is a Community School?
A Community School is:

  • Vibrant
  • Stimulating
  • Resourceful
  • Engaging
  • Student-centered
  • Open to You!

They demonstrate will by creating a culture of welcome in the school.
They demonstrate intent by involving the community in the school and by being involved in the community.
They demonstrate resources by having dedicated staff to develop and nurture partnerships to their full potential.

Learning doesn’t stop when the bell rings in the afternoon -- the school stays busy with after school programs, family activities, adult education, literacy and employment training.
Community-Education Partnerships
A Community School fosters relationships that transform a traditional school into a centre of learning for children, youth, families and communities before, during and after school hours.
This is achieved by sharing the physical, intellectual and cultural resources of the school and surrounding community.
The concept is simple:  local businesses, community groups, non-profit agencies and individuals partner with schools, providing support in the form of volunteers, or financial or in-kind assistance – in some cases all three!
Partnering with Community Schools enhances an organization’s:

  • Vision and mission
  • Employee development
  • Future workforce
  • Corporate reputation
  • Community good will
  • Customer loyalty

Partners recognize that education is a shared responsibility with rewards that benefit all.
